Permanent integration of neural electrodes using peptide hydrogels, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Description 
This project aims to engineer new biomaterials that can permanently integrate with the brain. This project expects to generate new knowledge using our innovative interdisciplinary approach to record at neuronal-electrode interfaces. Expected outcomes include enduring brain-compatible biomaterials which form new and functional neural networks. This should provide significant benefits including a greater understanding of how to control inflammation that will permit permanent integration of electrodes into the brain’s circuitry. This technology has the potential to transform the brain-machine interface leading to electrodes that are more reliable for stimulating and recording from the brain, such as those used in the bionic ear and bionic eye.
