The Neuroscience of Lifestyle Interventions: Physical Exercise and Mindfulness Meditation

The positive impact of modifiable lifestyle factors such as aerobic exercise and mindfulness meditation on mental health are well documented. However, an understanding their neurobiological mechanisms and therapeutic potential for mental illnesses beyond mood disorders is lacking. We have embarked on an exciting new program of neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience research to discover how exercise and meditation can improve brain and mental health, and their therapeutic potential for addictions and obsessive compulsive disorder. This PhD is an exciting opportunity to conduct a series of novel studies into the neurophysiological, cognitive and clinical impacts of exercise and mindfulness meditation. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof Murat Yücel and Dr Rebecca Segrave. They will join a world-leading research group with expertise in neuroimaging, development of novel cognitive testing tools, and running innovative clinical trials, and will develop skills in each of these areas.
