Implementing best practice for peripheral intravenous catheter use in Australian Emergency Departments: roadmap for national roll out

Description
This project will develop a roadmap for national scale up and toolkits for implementing best practice for peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) use, based on the outcome of an implementation science trial. The implementation science trial aims to reduce unnecessary PIVC insertion and improve use of the devices on patients in emergency departments (EDs) in nine participating hospitals in Australia. This project will include 1. Development of implementation toolkits for a diverse range of EDs. The toolkits will be co-designed with clinicians, health services, consumers and Monash University’s Design Health Collab using human centred design, to drive uptake and sustainability. The process will occur using a modified Delphi process. 2. A “snapshot” survey of PIVC use in Australian EDs. A survey will be conducted using our previously validated methodology and engage our jurisdictional partners in calling for an expression of interest for health services to join the national roll out.
