Evaluating the implementation of polycystic ovary syndrome guideline recommendations

This research endeavor centers on evaluating the implementation of guideline recommendations for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects one in six women of reproductive age and is associated with significant metabolic, reproductive, and psychiatric clinical sequelae. Despite its prevalence and impact, many clinicians lack sufficient training in PCOS, leading to variable clinical practice when caring for affected women. Women with PCOS often experience frustration due to delayed diagnosis, lack of information provision, and clinicians' limited understanding of the various associations and management of this condition. In response to these challenges, the Centre of Research Excellence in PCOS facilitated the publication of the first international evidence-based PCOS guideline in 2018, with an updated version in 2023. While the reach of these guidelines is vast, it remains unclear if the recommended practices have been effectively translated into clinical practice. This research program is dedicated to assessing the implementation and impact of PCOS guideline dissemination. Through epidemiological research utilizing a national large population-based cohort study, representative of community women in Australia, we will gather invaluable insights into the actual implementation of guideline recommendations. Additionally, data linkage with esteemed government registries, such as the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and Medicare Benefits Schedule, will provide a comprehensive view of PCOS care, encompassing prescription patterns, healthcare utilization, and clinical outcomes. This unparalleled source of information will enable us to identify gaps in clinical practice, develop a nuanced understanding of patient needs, and ultimately drive the translation of research findings into practice in PCOS management. By bridging the divide between evidence-based guidelines and clinical reality, we aspire to enhance healthcare for women with this complex condition.
