Community nurses perceptions of diet in wound healing

Poor nutrition is an established contributor to delayed wound healing, with adequate energy intake, macronutrients, and some micronutrients, such as protein, zinc, vitamin C and vitamin D all being important for timely tissue repair. Community nurses are central to providing regular wound care in a range of patients with wounds, and are primarily responsible for triage and onward referral. It is important to better understand the role of the community nurse in relation to nutrition and wound healing. Therefore, utilising a qualitative approach, this body of work will explore community nurses: perceptions of diet and wound healing, practices in dietary screening/assessment, practices in dietary interventions for wound healing and referrals, and barriers in screening and intervention.
