Advancing Global, Intercultural, and Interprofessional Learning through COIL

Description
Global mobility programs have long been recognised as powerful opportunities for developing intercultural awareness and global perspectives. However, their reach remains inherently limited by cost, logistics, and issues of equity. As higher education responds to increasingly complex global challenges, there is a growing need to design scalable, inclusive, and sustainable models of international learning that can benefit all students—not just those who are able to travel. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) represents one such transformative approach. By embedding globally connected, virtual learning experiences directly into the curriculum, COIL enables students from different countries and disciplines to collaborate on shared challenges. At Monash University, our COIL program has engaged hundreds of students across multiple countries and health disciplines, providing meaningful opportunities to develop intercultural capability, global citizenship, and collaborative practice. We are now seeking highly motivated Honours and PhD candidates interested in advancing the field of COIL and global education. This research will explore how virtual international learning can be designed, implemented, and evaluated to maximise impact for diverse student populations and disciplines. Potential research areas include: Development of intercultural competence and global citizenship in virtual learning environments Enhancing interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration across global contexts Designing and evaluating authentic, technology-enabled learning experiences (including AI simulations) Exploring equity, access, and inclusion in global education Understanding student and educator experiences in large-scale virtual exchange programs Measuring the impact of COIL on graduate capabilities and workforce readiness This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a rapidly evolving area of education research that sits at the intersection of global health, digital learning, and curriculum innovation. The work has strong potential to influence how universities design future-ready education and how graduates are prepared to work in diverse, interconnected systems. If you are passionate about education, global engagement, and creating meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond borders, this offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing international research agenda while making a tangible impact on student learning.
