4. Effect of insulin therapy on body composition in type 2 diabetes. Effect on muscle mass and function and activation of muscle growth pathways.

Description 
The student would study patients with type 2 diabetes before and after the commencement of insulin therapy. Patients would be studied before and 6 months after the commencement of therapy using dual energy xray absorptiometry, bioelectrical impedance, and thigh muscle cross sectional area by CT. Blood tests a for biomarkers of muscle mass and muscle biopsies will also be taken. Skeletal muscle growth pathways will be studies using Western blots and quantitative PCR techniques.
