Capturing dynamic neural activity of respiratory sensory processing

Description 
The status of the airways is constantly monitored by the respiratory sensory nerves which send the detected signals to the brain for further processing and generation of necessary behaviour and output. Existing studies have utilised functional MRI, electroencephalography or magnetoencephalography, which are not able to capture the dynamic changes in neurotransmitter levels in the brain regions involved in respiratory sensory processing. To address this major gap, this study will develop and examine a novel neuroimaging approach to measure neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of humans by using the state-of-the-art MRI facilities.
