Our research program aims to establish the causal role of specific brain regions and neurotransmitters across different phases of motor skill learning. We focus on understanding how new motor memories are encoded, consolidated, and retained to enable skilled behaviour. A key theme is the investigation of "micro-offline" gains—the rapid memory consolidation that occurs during short rest periods between practice attempts.
We employ a multidisciplinary approach combining cutting-edge brain stimulation and neuroimaging techniques. Our methodologies include transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) a technique that allows for the non-invasive, high-precision modulation of deep brain structures like the hippocampus and striatum, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG), and functional MRI (fMRI). We also utilise pharmacological challenges, such as dopamine D2 receptor antagonists, to examine the neurochemical basis of learning and cortical neurophysiology.
Potential Projects
• Neural Basis of Micro-Consolidation: Using network connectivity-guided TUS, this project seeks to dissociate the roles of the hippocampus and associative striatum in the rapid "micro-offline" gains observed during early skill learning.
• Temporal Dynamics of Motor Memory Consolidation: This research explores the relative contributions of the hippocampus, striatum, and motor cortex to the stabilisation and enhancement of motor memories over the hours-days following initial skill acquisition.
• Dopaminergic Modulation of Motor Learning: This project investigates the causal role of the dopamine D2 receptor in motor skill acquisition and learning-related cortical neurophysiology using pharmacological challenges combined with TMS-EEG.
