What are the health literacy needs of women with endometriosis?

Description
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects up to one in seven Australian women by the age of 44. It is a significant public health issue that requires increased clinical awareness, observation and management. Endometriosis has a significant impact on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of those with the condition. Effective treatment options are currently limited, and women are often exposed to a plethora of information (including misinformation), necessitating increased interaction with the healthcare system to manage symptoms effectively. Patients need skills and support to manage this condition effectively and to advocate for themselves and their healthcare needs. Health literacy is one tool that can empower and support individuals in health promotion, disease prevention, and healthcare. However, not much is known about the health literacy needs of Australian women with endometriosis. Therefore, this research seeks to understand the health literacy needs of women with endometriosis through a literature review and a survey using a validated Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). This project sits within SPHERE, an NHMRC funded Centre of Research Excellence in Sexual and Reproductive Health for Women in Primary Care. SPHERE is led by Professor Danielle Mazza and supported by multidisciplinary students and researchers in the Department of General Practice. The successful candidate will have opportunity to be part of this team with support from supervisors.
