Investigating neural control of cough suppression

Description 
Chronic cough affects about 10% of the global population with significant socioeconomic burden. Currently available therapeutic agents are not effective with the affected individuals coughing for years. Our previous studies have provided evidence that the brain processing of cough-inducing stimuli is altered in these affected individuals. Patients with chronic cough also have significant impairment in cough suppression. Limited understanding of neural mechanism of cough suppression hinders the development of effective therapy for this condition. This study will investigate and unravel neural mechanisms of cough suppression using the state-of-the-art neuroimaging approaches including functional MRI and non-invasive brain stimulation approaches.
